Walker Lumber, based in Nashville, Tennessee, has been providing quality building materials since 1949. When Walker Lumber isn’t assisting their customers with products, they focus on serving their community. Ray Hayles, co-owner of Walker Lumber, emphasized that Walker prioritizes making a difference in the lives of their employees and the community through their commitment to serving others with excellence. Their mission statement revolves around this principle, and it influences every aspect of their operations.
One of the many ways Walker Lumber gives back is through their merchandise. Their baseball hats are fan-favorite and are a staple walking into a Walker Lumber location. These hats not only serve to market their brand in the world, but they also bring comfort to those in need. All revenue generated from the merchandise is reserved for those in need within the Walker Lumber community. Hayles said previous sales from the hats have gone anyone experiencing hardships who is associated with Walker Lumber. These branded items not only generate awareness but also serve to give back.
Another key driver of the culture at Walker Lumber is their Second Chance program. Through partnerships with ministries focused on alcohol, drug, and prison rehab, they offer opportunities to individuals who are working on their recovery and seeking employment. By providing mentorship and a supportive environment, Walker Lumber aims to restore hope and dignity to those who have faced challenges in the past.
“When people show us that they care and that they're investing in our team the way our team would, we will create a path for them” says Hayles.
The Walker Lumber Second Chance program gives individuals the chance to move on from their past and create a better future. Hayles acknowledges that many who look for jobs often find lustrous careers due to the family element of their culture. One of the Members of the Management Team was a participant in the second chance program. His upward mobility within Walker is a testament to the care the Walker Lumber Team puts into others.

Hayles put it perfectly when summarizing Walker’s commitment to service: “Our purpose is to serve others with excellence in any relationship. We have the benefit that we can have relationships with not only our customers but with each other at work, and it really has to do with perspective. You can get so much more out of life if you have the proper perspective, and that's why everything goes back to our mission statement."
