McCray Lumber earns 'ProDealer of the Year' honors

Overland Park, Kan.-based McCray Lumber and Millwork has been named the 2021 “ProDealer of the Year.”

The annual award, selected by the editors of HBSDealer and the National Lumber and Building Material Dealers Association, is designed to recognize a high-performance lumberyard with a commitment to best practices and the best values of the lumber and building material industry.

The selection of McCray Lumber marks the first time that a former HBSDealer “Independent ProDealer of the Year” honoree has grown and flourished to achieve distinction in the larger category open to all multi-unit lumberyards. McCray had previously accepted the “Independent” classification award in 2005.

Today, the company operates seven locations, including a distribution center, a multi-family division and a millwork showroom and production facility.

“McCray Lumber and Millwork is so proud to be recognized as the ProDealer of the Year,” said Steve Haynes, chief operating officer. “This award is about our people! Our success is simply because our employees are the best. Through Covid-19, shortages or heavy workloads, their great attitude makes for a winning formula as they strive as a unit for customer satisfaction.

“We are thankful to our customers, suppliers and our families for helping us succeed,” he added.

McCray Lumber & Millwork will formally accept the award during the 2021 ProDealer Industry Summit, a virtual event that will bring the industry together for education and networking May 19-21.

The company has been a leader in the building products community since 1947, when it was founded as Daniels-McCray Lumber Company. Organic growth– such as the opening of Pioneer Millwork in 1974 -- has been compounded by notable acquisitions over the years: R.L. Sweet Lumber Company (1997), Grand River Lumber Company (2001), Builder’s Resource (2004), and Whelan’s Lumber (2008).

Hatch McCray and Chandler McCray, grandchildren of the founder, continue the traditions of the family business with a focus on growing to serve their markets. Hatch’s efforts on behalf of the industry extend to the Mid-America Lumbermens Association, of which he is immediate past president.

Past honorees of the “ProDealer of the Year” award include National Lumber (2020); Mead Lumber (2019) and Drexel Building Supply (2019).

The ProDealer of the Year award ceremony will take place on May 21. It will feature a moderated and interactive discussion with the 2021 ProDealer of the Year and Independent ProDealer of the Year.

The Summit, hosted jointly by the NLBMDA and HBSDealer, provides an exclusive three-day virtual educational forum designed to promote the growth of lumber & building product dealers, distributors, wholesalers, and the manufacturers who supply them.
