La Mesa Lumber & Hardware is a full service, retail lumber, hardware, and building materials dealer situated on four acres in La Mesa, California. La Mesa Lumber was established in 1907 and has been family owned and operated since 1945. Wes Troy, General Manager of La Mesa Lumber, is part of the 4th generation working in the Lumber yard, with over 7 family members employed by La Mesa, reflecting their strong family values. La Mesa Lumber stands out as one of the few independent lumber companies still operating in San Diego County. Their goal is to offer customers the opportunity to shop locally in a friendly atmosphere with exceptional service and good quality products.
With around 43 employees, La Mesa is growing rapidly, and they are trying to find more space for their business with the busy season. “Our inventory has tripled since 2020,” Troy stated, “We’re finding every little bit of space to put stock into.” Wes went on to explain that they are packing the 4-acre lot that they have full of as much lumber and building materials as possible to keep up with demand.
Beyond just lumber, La Mesa Lumber also does decking, siding, windows and doors, special millwork, framing, and just about everything. La Mesa is one of the few custom mills left in San Diego County. “We have different saws to create different profiles. Customers with older houses within the area will bring in samples of siding or something they need to replace in their custom home, and they can bring in the sample and the guys here are able to recreate that sample and match it identically to what they have in the house.” Wes explained. La Mesa sells tools as well and has its own hardware store. They have one of the largest stock selections of Simpson hardware for builders.
La Mesa Gives Back to the Community
For 30 years, La Mesa Lumber has been showing their appreciation for their customers and community through monthly summertime barbeques. Wes stated, “It is a customer appreciation/vendor knowledge event.” La Mesa Lumber staff barbeques all the food themselves, offering a free lunch to customers and the community. The variety includes food such as hamburgers, hotdogs, hot links and chili, grilled asparagus, and all the fixins. “It has always just been something that La Mesa Lumber has done for our customers.” Troy said.
In addition to the barbeque, La Mesa gives back to their community during the summer by donating a truck stage to a free local car show. La Mesa Lumber contributes a 1965 Ford delivery truck that they built a stage on for concerts at the event. There are free concerts on the back of the stage every Thursday during the summer. “It’s kind of fun to be a part of that and have our truck, you know be the main stage in that event and to give back to the community that supports us.” Wes exclaimed.
LMC makes an Impact
When asked to reflect on La Mesa’s time at LMC since joining in March 2024, Wes Troy commented, “We’re still finding things out and seeing what works and what doesn’t.” He explained, “One of the main reasons was, you know, to open our avenues of who we can buy from. Being a one location company, some of the larger distributors don’t feel we’re worthwhile, but joining LMC has changed that.” La Mesa Lumber joined LMC to open the avenues of getting the products out that their customers need.
La Mesa Lumber exemplifies a business deeply rooted in its community and committed to offering exceptional service. With La Mesa Lumber being family owned and operated since 1945, the company stands as a testament to enduring family values and local dedication. La Mesa’s unwavering dedication to quality service, community involvement, and family values secures its place as a cherished and enduring institution. The company’s ongoing efforts to adapt and grow, while staying true to their local roots, ensure that La Mesa Lumber will remain a cornerstone of the La Mesa community for years to come.
