Berry Home Centers Celebrate 50 Years in Business

Berry Home Centers Celebrate 50 Years in Business Main Image
Berry Home Centers, Inc, has its roots in a family business founded in 1939 by Chilhowie entrepreneur Fount W. Berry. Over the years the business expanded from selling produce, dry goods, and scrap metal into residential development. The Berry family opened Berry Builders and Supply in 1973. The Chilhowie store on Whitetop Road was the area’s first full-scale building materials supplier and truss manufacturer. In 1977, a second store was opened on Main Street in Abingdon, VA.

Tom Bishop, a grandson of Berry who grew up working in his family’s businesses, purchased the majority interest in the company in 1986 and renamed it Berry Home Centers, Inc. The Chilhowie store then moved to its current location on Main Street, and in 1996 the retail location in Abingdon was replaced with a state-of-the-art lumberyard, indoor warehouse, and showroom at Ole Berry Drive near exit 14.

Today, Berry Home Centers continues to be the region’s leading independent and family-owned building materials supplier serving Southwest Virginia. The company has expanded in recent years to serve the Tri-Cities, New River Valley, and even more of Southwest Virginia. Bishop’s daughter Leslie and her husband Chris Brewer are the fourth generation of the family working in the business. Abingdon store manager Steve Kegley has more than forty years of experience at Berry’s.
